Broken image after running a while

    Hi,

I installed Kubuntu 12.04 on my laptop (Acer TravelMate 6292) and there's a problem that upset me very much.

After running for a while, no more than one hour, sometime it would happen in ten minutes,
my desktop would start to have broken image, just like the attached image.

At first I upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 and had this problem. Then, I tried to format the /usr, /, partitions and installed a fresh 12.04. The problem was still there.

Now I install back to 11.10 and there's no such problem.

I wonder if the problem is on i915 driver on ubuntu 12.04.

    Does anyone see similar problem?

Can you explain in more detail what you mean by "broken image"? I'm unsure of what portion in the screen shot you would consider "broken." Also, what theme are you using?

I didn't change the theme, so it should be default after a fresh install.

In the attached image, you can see that the words in the dialog was missing. In the tab bar also words missing. In the upper right corner of the dialog you can see abnormal icons there. In the upper right corner the google search bar was not correct either. Actually there are more but I couldn't take snapshot when it went wrong. I just used my smart phone to take photos like that.

Depending on the type of video card you are using it might help to switch off the Desktop Effects.

As I have said, I'm using onboard vga chip which uses i915 driver.

It is okay in oneiric, but not in precise. Turning off the desktop effects didn't help.

              Yes, I have different partitions for /, /usr, /opt and /home.

But I also tried with my ~/.kde/ removed and started a whole fresh KDE.

                let's see the output of
                Code:
                lspci | grep VGA
                VINNY
                i7 4core HT 8MB L3 2.9GHz

I'm running Kubuntu 11.10 oneiric now, but I believe that the result should be the same.

                  $ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) (rev 03)

BTW, when things went wrong I tried to logout the session. I couldn't see the logout prompt but it was actually there, and if I blindly clicked the position I could log out, and everything went back to normal after X server restarted.

I still wonder if the problem was in the i915 driver...
