    . http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa...011817_all.deb
    . http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa...1817_amd64.deb

After downloading the packages, run the following terminal command from the folder in which these packages reside:
    Code:

    sudo dpkg -i linux-*.deb
This will install the kernel and add it to your boot menu as the default kernel. The current Precise kernel will remain installed and can be selected at boot using the "Older Linux Versions" menu option.

    I hope this helps!

You are right, my system booted up in crap mode. I didn't follow those instructions. What i did was add repos and updated. After the update, my system took a dive for the worst. It was on life support for 30 minutes until I removed the repos, updated and removed new kernel, then downgraded and updated grub, then reupdated my nvidia drivers and now im back in xrender mode. I tried opengl and it crashed within 5 minutes. Xrender is flawless but i hate the vsync issue. I preffer this than unity.

the "extras" package is just that .....all the extra modules (drivers) that used to be in the kernel image package .
with nvidia you probably still would have had to reinstall your driver as well .

Which kernel did you download? The links in Mr Bumpy's post point to 3.4 release candidate 5, which has been superceded.

The separte -extra package began appearing in late May. So whenever you're looking in one of the subdirectories on kernel.ubuntu.com, if you see a linux-image-extra, it will be required.

          More info, quoted from http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11964380:
linux-image-*-generic contains vmlinuz, eg. the actual kernel, without which booting ain't gonna happen. It also contains a modest set of kernel modules, device drivers, and firmware.

linux-image-extra-*-generic contains just a big collection of kernel modules / device drivers.

Unfortunately this is still happening on Kubuntu 12.10 beta 2 using kernel 3.5.0-17-generic.
