    external harddisk problem

    Hello,

I have an external harddisk, formatted in NTFS.
I never had problems, until i formatted my laptop to Kubuntu 12.04.
the mounting is successful, but disappears after a while. I can copy some files without problems, but multiple directories always fail.

Does anyone has an idea what can cause the problem?

    tx.

are you sure the disk is healthy? you could install the gnome-disk-utility to check what S.M.A.R.T. reports
    sudo apt-get install gnome-disk-utility

    to run it call
    /usr/bin/palimpsest

I would have a look at /var/log/syslog and look at the time stamp around when the drive disappears. If you know what it is referenced as (say /dev/sdb or the like) then you could do something like cat /var/log/syslog | grep /dev/sdb to see the activity for that device.

        tx,

I connected it to a windows machine, and did a checkdisk. This was ok.
I also notice that when i move folders to, i have a problem.
When i copy them first and than i delete them, it's better...

so i now have no problem...
I'll look later for the outputs.
