upgrading from stock kubuntu to backoports version breaks desktop search

hope this is the correct place to ask this...
I have completed a debootstrap install of ubuntu precise, added the kubuntu backports ppa and then made a full kubuntu-desktop install. in this raw kde 4.13 installation, I found that neither nepomuk or baloo was working. Nepomuk was installed, but no kcm module was available ( nothing related was shown in kcmshell4 --list or in the control panel ). Baloo was not installed at all. now, everything is working after ppa-purge kubuntu-ppa/backports (downgrade to kde 4.8), but I really want latest kde. Yes,I need desktop search, but found baloo really resource-greedy in a trusty test install, while nepomuk / virtuoso works well for me. Unfortunately, I cant do a fresh install right now, so I hope you guys can lead me to a solution by package manipulation. Maybe a baloo install for precise? Maybe pinning or holding nepomuk / virtuoso ?

    Thankyou in advance!

    Welcome.

I won't attempt to answer as to what may have happened, but if you need full-search capability from the Desktop, I'd suggest installation of recoll. This is an amazingly fast full-system search tool. Once the index is built, finding things with recoll is simply beyound impressive. recoll is in the repositories.

I experimented with recoll once upon a time. I dont remember why did i discarded it then, but I'd rather use a kde-native solution. furthermore, nepomuk did the job for me in my previous installation ( pre kde 4.13 ).

Yes, but nepomuk is no more, replaced with baloo.

because with the Precise backport: http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2014/05/09...el.html#t12:39
allee Is it intentional that in precise the upgrade from kde 4.12 -> 4.13 does not install baloo pkg? 12:39
apachelogger if I had a say in it there would not have been 4.13 for precise :P 12:40
          * yofel thought we at least had a recommends on baloo *somewhere* other than the metapackage 12:41

Ok, first of all, thank you all for your suggestions.
If I get it right, my options are i) install baloo from repos for kde 4.13 ii) hold earlier kde a) stock 4.8 or b) some other from backports , iii) use an alternative, for example recoll. I have read really nasty things about baloo, and holding kde ( 4.11 for example) might become a nightmare in packaging consistency ( is it true? ) , so I will try to experiment with recoll while on stock 4.8, and see what happens.
