It haunts my T520 something terrible, and no amount of kernel fiddling makes it go away. I can reliably trigger the freeze whenever I make a call on my VoIP with a USB headset.
Interesting..you may be on to something, but I don't know if this is the same issue. From the way firefox is described in the second link, I have been noticing text disappear from my posts but reappear if i highlight it with the mouse. However, I have only started noticing this more recently, while the freezing was a long term issue. Does xorg utilize the intel video even when using a dedicated gpu? I was under the impression the gpu portion of the cpu was disabled when using a dedicated gpu?

I updated, rebooted, and then it prompted me to update the kernel and HP printer drivers. http://i.imgur.com/53a9g.png I noticed a quick freeze just after booting up after installing those. However I have been able to browse around quite a bit with no freezes so far. Do you suggest making KDE tweaks first before proceeding to install packages?

    I wouldn't install 'third party' software. I don't. I install 'later'.

Reinstalling now. Live cd burnt yesterday and has the newer installer(could have sworn kubuntu used a rethemed Ubuntu installer). If I do another reinstall should I Install third party software? This time I checked it.

Sure. Fresh (formatted partitions) of a current 12.04 LiveCD. Reboot. Then, sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. Nothing else. Test and ensure that all works. Then, and only then, make your changes -- ONE at a time -- and reboot and test.

What about apt update/upgrade? Should I run it or not?

I have to suggest, doing a fully 'clean' install of a totally 'default' 12.04. Absolutely nothing else. No PPA's. Nothing. Nada. Ensure that it works 'vanilla' first. Then, and only then, make 'one' change at a time and then reboot. Evaluate and document.

System Freezing Up on Nearly Fresh Install

I am starting a new thread because I now have a nearly fresh install of Kubuntu(Precise). So far I have sudo apt-get update/upgrade, rebooted, added kde-goodies but have not installed anything from it. I have added the kde firefox ppa and installed firefox and kmozilla helper. I added the icon only task manager replacing the default task manager widget. I added the trash can widget to the panel, removed the activities widget from the panel, I marked dolphin, firefox and konsole to show launchers when not open. Thats it, literally a nearly fresh install with no real tweaks and the system still freezes and it is actually worse then before reinstalling! I can't even launch firefox with out the system completely freezing or partially freezing(such as a single app not responding). Any ideas on how to make the system stable?
