The weirdest thing, 16x DVD writer

Went to burn a DVD iso (a transcoded TV show to play in my livingroom home player), put a blank DVD+R in the drive (did this a 'million' times without incident) and it wasn't being 'seen' by KDE or K3b, the DVD writer is hooked up to the (SATA) JMicron controller on the mobo (it's the only device on that controller), which was in IDE mode, so I shutdown, went in the BIOS and changed the JMicron controller to AHCI mode and this fixed the 'problem'. Just for information sake, I keep my 12.04.x LTS up to date, this happened after the last update (from 12.04.2 to 12.04.3). Maybe it's the mobo, it is showing its age.

I didn't try to recreate the scenario so this could have been a 'one off' due to lag, etc, not quite sure.

This post isn't a question, it's more of a heads up.

May be a bad drive. I had to replace my dvd burner last year or so ago.
