So, how do you lock the driver, then? (I'm not too familiar with KDE/Kubuntu.)

I must be the luckiest guy here (knocks on wood). I have the 295.40 nvidia driver but I haven't run into any problems. I don't have alot of effects enabled, just transparency, cube, and wobble. Then again, I've had pecise on this thing since alpha 2 so I don't know if that made any difference.

Did you guys ever try and use "suspend desktop effects for fullscreen windows" checked on? it disabled desktop effects when playing games and runs much smoother. Even video as well. its in desktop effects system settings, advanced.

I know there's an apt-get command (I'm not at my machine, so I can't look it up), but you can easily do it in muon. Just find the module, right click, and say lock.

Now I've locked "Nvidia-current" in Muon Package Manager... Thank you so much again!

Yesterday was released a new version of nvidia driver (295.49) correcting this issues. But still is not in update repository.

good to know. btw, my system hasnt crashed, i just did a fresh install and followed the install instructions.

#sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get install nvidia-current=295.33-0ubuntu1~precise~xup1

After following your bash commands to load the 295.33 nvidia driver, it caused no end of trouble. My machine ran v-e-r-y slow and reverted to 480X 620? graphic emulation and rejected every other setting. After messing with it for several hours, I found a suggestion that worked well so far. I had never installed Kubuntu with my graphics in my machine instead of adding it later. During a fresh install 12.04 identified my card, installed the correect driver, and so far it's running like a top.

yup, it's a known fact some drivers works better with certain cards than others.

Caesar, When you have Muon check for updates, it will show up under Application Updates/NVidia binary X.Org driver ('current driver') Click it to check the details. As of today, it's still showing 295.40. When that changes to 295.49, I'd try to install it. Otherwise uncheck it.

You can manualy download from packages.ubuntu.com the new version (295.49) compiled for ubuntu 12.10. It is working fine for me. I just don't understand why is not yet compiled for Precise. After download use the command

sudo dpkg -i nvidia-current_295.49-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

if you're using x86 version.

For those of you who do not feel like installing 295.49 the manual way (borked my xserver ) or waiting for it to reach the repositories I found a good alternative repository. When you run it in Konsole you will notice that the description is in Italian, just ignore it and go ahead with the install. It works great. No more sluggishness, the Noveau driver was "ok" but it was just enough fo basic hardware acceleration and crashed ever so often. It is good to be back on the proper Nvidia driver again. Woohoo! .
