Blackpaw,
Thanks for the tip. It's late right now, but I'll check it out tomorrow. I'd been thinking about the VM for some time, just hadn't got around to it. Just started in linux in March. It's a whole new world in computing, opened a lot of new vistas for me to explore.
Thanx,

I throughly recommend installing VirtualBox and setting up a full kubuntu install in that for fiddling and testing, apart from not breaking your desktop you can just take snapshots and roll back when things go pear shapedOriginally posted by capt-zero View Postmacwolf74 et al,
The only issues (if you can call them that) were all self inflicted. It's taken me a while to become adjusted to the risks and joys of so much control. By this I mean, as a newbie, it is very easy to change something and not remember what I changed. So if the change doesn't work, it can be troublesome. >

That's why all of my installs start at 11:30PM and end at 3:00AM... my wife has gone off to bed.
Seriously though... I',m running 12.04b2 from last Saturday and it is just fine. I did a dist-upgrade yesterday, and 483 packages went in with the only hitch being the yellow light bulb. Not too shabby. Certainly a better experience than the massive LMDE/Gnome3 thing that led to me finding Kubuntu 12.04. I do still have one outstanding issue left with my Intel Wifi and WPA2 authentication. I found a couple of threads here recommending WiCD as a workaround, but I'm waiting to see if a real fix comes throuh before I remove Network Manager. WEP does work, so for now that is serving me.
I can honestly say that this has been one of the smoothest Pre-Release Linuxes I've ever had the privilege to work with. And I'm still dazzled by just how slick KDE 4.8 is.Last edited by aybesea; Apr 22, 2012, 07:57 AM.

Hm. Does your wife know my wife? Because those "techniques" sound awfully familiar!

Thanx! LOL, I've waited this long, I guess I can wait a bit longer. Besides, my wife will forcibly drag my rear to bed if I'm not in it here shortly. I've to be at work in a little over 6 hrs. and she doesn't care to listen to me saying "Ok, I'm getting up" every five mins. for a half an hour each time she elbows my in the side to get up.Originally posted by SteveRiley View PostWelcome to KFN, scrubjay. After reading all of the positive posts concerning 12.04 Kubuntu, I'm looking forward to installing it on my main computer. A while back I dumped 11.10 due to unmitigated issues and turned to LMDE, it is decent but I dislike the occasional show stopper. I like a "set it and forget it" approach to my OS and look forward to a LTS.

More than anything else, it reflect's Canonical's decision to focus their efforts on finding more income from a couple sources... Unity, which they hope will be successful on tablets and smartphones; and Ubuntu One, which offers subscriptions. Kubuntu falls outside that scope, and the decision to move Jonathan Riddel to other projects meant that Kubuntu would move to the same standing as Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Mythbuntu, Edubuntu, and Ubuntu Studio.

I wasn't implying that I thought Kubuntu was going away... simply questioning the logic behind Canonical's decision. It seems to be poorly thought out. But hey... what do I know? Anyway... I'm quite happy that I've landed here. And thank you for the warm welcome.

Welcome to the forum, and to the Kubuntu community.Originally posted by aybesea View PostI don't understand Canonical's thinking behind abandoning Kubuntu at this time, since KDE 4.8 is truly impressive and this release has been nearly flawless. But so be it... you've got a new convert.
If I may... Canonical didn't "abandon" Kubuntu. Kubuntu has always been a community-driven distribution, like the other recognized Ubuntu flavors. Kubuntu enjoyed the special distinction of having a Canonical employee guide the development of the project. Canonical decided they no longer wished to fund that role. Now, another organization has decided to step in.
Kubuntu is at no risk of disappearing.

I'm new here, but not to Linux. I had used Ubuntu/Gnome since Dapper, but left when Unity was shoved down my throat. I tried Kubuntu at that time, but found it to be a bit buggy and unstable. Moved over to LMDE/Gnome until recently when they forced the Gnome3 upgrade. I was actually to a point where I honestly didn't want to use my computers anymore. Then I decided to try Kubuntu 12.04 to see if KDE had matured at all. I am shocked... amazed... ENTHRALLED! I am so happy with this release. It is easy, stable and extremely comforatable.

Yes, this is very great for the KDE community and probably developers...Originally posted by tdockery97This from the Netrunner OS site:

It would appear that Blue Systems has a huge interest in all development of the KDE Desktop and is now, and plans to continue, developing various KDE focused distros. In my opinion this is very good news for all KDE users.

Sometimes what I think and what my fingers type are not the same, and my brain isn't quick enough any more to catch the difference.
