    Beta2 experience.

    Hi Guys,

after killing my Beta 1 install with an errant update in the early hours of Saturday morning (ended up with a system that wouldn't even start to boot with errors about not enough memory).. I re-installed again but thought I'd give Beta 2 a go.

Apart from the fact that it took several hours to download the CD (why are the mirrors so slow, and why can't I pick a local one for the download?) I installed Beta 2.

This again took hours to get to 90% complete and then just hung.

I forced a reboot and the system came up (thank goodness) and I then re-installed all of my home directory.

So far so good, except the whole experience took about 18 hours to complete (what a waste of a day.. but that's the bleeding edge for you).

Is it possible for the installer to allow you to select the repo to get the files needed from? The local one seems to be much faster when I can finally select it after the first reboot.

    Thanks.

    Peter.

When you do the install from the Live CD/USB desktop you can first set the desired server.

The fastest downloads are via a torrent but these pre-releases are apparently only available from a limited number of servers and not as a torrent.
I must say I haven't seen slow downloads or installs but I've stopped choosing the option of updates during the install, I had several strange issues that went away when doing upgrades only once I'm logged in to the fresh system.

A slow install without downloads is probably the sign of a bad ISO, depending on the hardware a CD-size install should take somewhere between 20 and 50 minutes.

And I'm probably lucky with a VDSL speed of >34,000 kbit/s
