 Hello and welcome to KFN!

It could be something as simple as the input being muted or not selected. Go to K > System Settings > Multimedia > Phonon. In the first tab, "Device Preference", go to the "Audio Recording" line (and the 3 sub-items under it) - do you have anything other than "Internal Audio Analog Stereo"? (which is the only item that I have).

On the second tab "Audio Hardware Setup", go to the "Sound Device" drop-down and select "Recording (...)". The Connector drop-down should change to something like "Internal Microphone", and you should get a box below this titled "Input Levels" with a bar (gauge) that moves with the current microphone volume. Say something or make a noise - does the gauge move?

Finally, click the volume icon in system tray and click "Mixer" at the bottom. You should get a small dialogue box - go to the Capture Devices tab and make sure it is not muted.I'd rather be locked out than locked in.

I have had the same problem with Pulse and external webcam and mic, Pulse does not see them, so I deleted Pulse, rebooted and now it is seen and works perfectly with Skype. I think Pulse needs to be corrected so that it sees the webcams and mic, this has been the same problem since 10.04 with Pulse on my systems (4)
