12.04 Beta or 11.10?

Hi.

I just got a machine at work which I intend to use as my main development workstation. I've been using Kubuntu since 8.04. Now that 12.04 LTS is out in Beta, should I install it or 11.10? If I install 12.04 Beta, will I be able to dist-upgrade to the release version once it comes out?

I'm running 12.04 beta on a few machines and all is working well. However, if you choose to wait for the final release you can do a dist upgrade at that time. And if you install 11.10 and decide you can't wait go here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Pr...grades/Kubuntu

You should never use a development version for your main production machine....

Now, having said that 12.04 is on my main production machine and I'm very happy with it. Keep in mind if you go this route you're taking a chance, but a beta is pretty close to the final product.

Thanks guys. I went ahead and installed 11.10 this morning, and I'm very happy with it so far. That said, I feel relieved to know that 12.04 Beta is in good shape. I might wipe out 11.10 and install 12.04 tomorrow...

You don't necessarily have to wipe and install. Just enter kubuntu-devel-release-upgrade in krunner and go for the upgrade if you're willing to go that route.

been running 12.04 since its first alpha, i've had no issues on my netbook what so ever, and its faster then 11.10 was here.

I've been running Precise since Jan 3rd, when it was Alpha. Precise gives me no problems. It is FAST, it drives my Intel HD Graphics card at up to 50 fps, which is astounding for a mid to low range card, and all the plasma widgets I've used work well. For the first time since I started using Kubuntu in Feb of 2009, I have stayed with KNetWorkManager, instead of replacing it with WICD, and it has given me no problems what so ever.

There are some niggly bits. At least one application I like to use, BibleTime, won't run. After the UI opens it crashes with a segfault when I open a text.

LibreOffice crashed for the first time on me. Well, not exactly on me. I used it to display an XLS spreadsheet on parabolic collector designs posted by GreenPowerScience's Dan Rohas. All of its features (buttons, graphs, scrolls, etc...) worked great. Then I minimized it and started looking at something else. I forgot about it. About an hour or so later a crash msg appeared in the system tray. It had crashed just setting there for an hour with no input or focus.

KMail would crash two or three times after first opening it, when I tried to delete some emails. After those crashes it worked fine for the rest of the day. Since upgrades earlier in the week all crashing of KMail 4.8.1 has stopped.

Cheese does not work. It may work now, but I uninstalled it when it crashed because other apps do the same thing.

Except for the update problem I have here, PP has been working smoothly otherwise. It looks like, though, Imay have to reinstall to fix if one doesn't come down the pike by the weekend.

Thanks again. I did perform a clean install of 12.04 on the machine today. It's amazingly fast and fairly stable (even so for a Beta version). I did run into a few minor quirks I needed to work out, but nothing major. In the end everything I need runs very smoothly!

I checked out the SecondLife viewer and the PhoenixViewer.

They both crash kdm and throw me back to the login screen.

But, I am not going to persue that problem because SecondLife is about dead, and their latest policy changes makes support of open source viewers difficult, which will kill it faster.

And someday all this will make for great social analysis lessons. I dearly hope someone, somewhere, is busily writing The Decline and Fall of the Virtual Limpire: A Technanthropological Survey.
