Bug with NVIDIA 290.20 driver and Quadro NVS 130M card

I've just reported a bug involving the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 130M card in my laptop in combination with the current NVIDIA driver version 290.20
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...rs/+bug/946234

This driver causes significant instability and will eventually lock the system.
When I revert to version 280.13 all is well.

I had observed the same issue in Kubuntu 12.04 but there is no option to revert to an older version.

Is this possibly due to a newer version of the kernel, or does that matter in this case? Also, is the option you mentioned in "Hardware Drivers," (or jockey?)

The problem existed in 12.04 since I first installed it in January.
It has only a few days ago come up in 11.10, right when the nVidia driver was upgraded to the same version 290.20 that's also in 12.04.
When I revert in 11.10 to the also available nVidia driver version 280.13 all is well.
A couple of minutes ago when I was typing this reply the computer again locked up and I had to reboot using the magic keys.

The kernels of 11.10 and 12.04 are different and yes I use Jockey to select the driver.

        Hi...

I'm guessing this will need to be your solution until either Nvidia or Canonical gets things straightened out. I'm not sure what else to suggest here. :-(

          I found (was forced to...) a new solution, a ThinkPad W520 NY54LMH 15.6", 2760QM, 500GB.

After another lock up the whole computer seems near-dead, either the video card or part of the motherboard has died.
I feel it's a bit of a chicken and egg question what came first.
Although it's since the LCD screen rare to cause damage to a video card via the driver (settings) I have to conclude the system only locked up with the latest driver.

The new laptop should be delivered after the weekend and I can't wait to tackle the special dual Intel + nVidia video card configuration it has.

I suspect you'll be getting intimate with the Bumblebee Project. Let us know how well it works.

It's going to be interesting, the progress of the Bumblebee project is a major reason I did not decide against this interesting laptop.
If Bumblebee doesn't (yet) pan out there is a BIOS switch to 'hardwire' one video card.
The plan is to have a near-permanent VB with a fast (gamers) edition of XP running my work related 16-bit Windows software, it worked fine on the now deceased Tecra-S5 so it should be really good on the new machine.
