how to enable beep in gvim

I'd like gvim to beep, but it doesn't. A nice beep sound set up in system settings, application and system notifications, manage notifications
would be good. In Lucid, event source KDE workspace, beep did the trick, and I've set that. Vim in konsole beeps nicely because there's an event source for konsole.

I really don't want the old PC speaker beep, but that doesn't work in KDE anyway. gvim beeps in a Gnome session.

Further to this, emacs, gedit, and xterm won't beep either. (Nor will kate, but a hunt through its options suggests that it doesn't beep ever.)

I think there's something borked about the gnome side of things in my install. I compile my own vim, so as a workaround I've put a call into libcanberra, for the "bell" sound, bit of a learning curve but it works well.
