Just to be clear: you go into system settings > multimedia > phonon > device preference tab; and for 'audio playback' you have set HDMI as the preferred device (so it's at the top of the list)? And you've done this for 'audio playback' itself not just 'audio playback > music'?

That was me. The OP had used PHP tags. In 'old' KFN, running on SMF, the use of CODE tags for such a listing, would result in the [size] 'tags' in the listing to change the font of the listing from that point forward. Always made for a botched listing which I went in behind and 'fixed'. I was concerned the same would happen here in vBulletin. I just 'tested' that, and no, vBulletin doesn't treat those 'tags' that way, so I've edited the post again and replaced the QUOTE tags with CODE.

Yes, it is at the top for both audio playback and for audio playback > video. Like I said I hear sound out of the HDTV speakers when I hit the test buttons but when I start a video in vlc I only get laptop sound. I've also tried various video players all with the same effect

I'm not sure why my post was edited. If I used the wrong format I apologize I was using what I thought was the proper way to keep a very long terminal output a reasonable size for the forum post. It's not something I do often so if I used the wrong format I'm sorry. Anyway back to the sound issue if anyone has a idea why this might be behaving this way I would greatly appreciate any help. Thank You

No need to be sorry or to apologize. There wasn't anything wrong with using the PHP tag, but the CODE tag is 'more appropriate' (IMO).

Is this true for all apps, except the settings test button? Do you get HDMI sound from flash videos? MP3s? system sounds?

If you open kmix (e.g. click volume icon > Mixer) what does it show for playback devices and for playback streams? - while vlc is running.

im using the hdmi now for sound and it was really easy to get it working by just changing the device to hdmi audio , you might also want to check the second tab in multimedia-> phonom its called "audio hardware setup" , in this tab you can set what ports the devices themselves are susposed to use. perhaps something is off on your hdmi setup, or the wrong profile is selected.

The problem has been fixed by installing the newest ATI Catalyst drivers. I probably should have tried that first but I have usually always avoided those drivers in the past coming from Ubuntu or Mint where they caused a lot of problems in gnome 3 and unity. I'm happy to say everything is working properly now. Thank you for tips and suggestions.

Trying to mark this [SOLVED] but I cant seem to edit the title. Perhaps a mod could mark it for me if you see this please.

you have to use the thread tools menu at the top of the thread to mark as solved (im gonna fix my signature also)
