Lost Sound After Latest Updates

My Laptop is totally quiet after the latest updates which included the kernel and pulseaudio. No system sounds, mp3 files are silent, YouTube has not sound, Skype has no sound.

Has anyone else experienced this total silence?

This is very embarrasing. I now have sound working. I tracked it down to hardware as the volume, of all things, had been turned down on my external speakers. It would be good if I could deleted this entry. Unfortunately this will probably stay around to remind me to be more thorough in my checking before doing a post like this.
