What kind of video(s) are you playing ?
What is the feedback from the player ?
The main difference between the Dragon and the VLC is that the Dragon is depending installed codecs. The VLC has build in codecs.
Have you installed the kubuntu-restricted-extras, ffmpeg or something else ?

    With the VLC:

Start the VLC from the konsole:
    Code:
    vlc /path/to/the/video.type
    Are there error messges ?

How the VLC is seeking the video ?
    VLC > Tools > Media Information (Ctrl+I)

    Have you tried ?

What i mean: Start the vlc from the konsole. Give the video clip name with the full path as an argument. If the name has space characters use the quotation marks around.

The media player, launched from the command line could show meaningful information of the problem. An example: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1487588

I was succeeded in playing videos from vlc by doing the following steps:
open VLC player, goto Tools->Preferences->Video and select X11 for the display output and that prevents the crash

                Hi,

I'm facing the below menioned issues after the fresh 12.04 kubunutu on my desktop.

                1. Dragon player is only playing audio when i any format of video files.
                2. Vlc player is playing the video files but it producing some horizontal lines while playing the fast moving scenes in all the video format.

I have tried below methods to in an attempt to fix the issues with regard to vlc player.
                1. Changed the display output module to x11.
                2. Enabled in Deinterfacing and choosen Blend as Deinterfacing mode.
                3. Disabled overlay video output options.
But still i'm facing the above mentioned issue on the vlc player.

Please help me in fixing both the issues.
