how to upgrade 10.04 to 11.10

I had the Updates tab in kpackagekit set to only show long term releases, but now I want to upgrade 11.10. I set the "show new distribution relase" to "Normal Releases", the only distro upgrade available in kpackagekit is to 10.10. Maybe I'm missing a source?

I don't think so. In your case, a "new distribution release" would be 10.10. You can opt to upgrade to 10.10 and then again to 11.04 and once again to 11.10. BUT, you would be much better served to just install "fresh" 11.10 if that is what you want.

The standard caveat of backing up your /home/user directory applies, unless you truly want a "completely clean" installation of 11.10, in which case, prepare your HDD and reformat all partitions.
