KDE 4.8.0b udpate (27/02/2012) - Lost most of my settings

Hi,

I have just update from http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu + oneiric + main and I have lost all my widget/icons settings on the default activiy ... Search and Launch & Desktop Icons activities are also completly empty.

Of course I did not include my ~/.kde in my backtintime machine :-(

Some errors found in ~/.xsession-errors
"/usr/bin/kactivitymanagerd(2401)" Soprano: "QLocalSocket::connectToServer: Invalid name"
"/usr/bin/kactivitymanagerd(2401)" Soprano: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown - The name org.kde.nepomuk.services.nepomukstorage was not provided by any .service files"

Had the same problem here. All widgets, icons, and activities were cleaned out by the upgrade.

It seems I cannot launch any activity ... icon is there but if I stop/start nothing happen!
I have still the same message from ~/.xsession-errors something related to nepomuk ....

Seems I cannot even remove it
"Virtual packages like 'nepomukcontroller' can't be removed"

Seems new package available ... a lot of updates of qt4 and kactivitymanager .... nothing solve. It is even worse as now I cannot even see the "play" icon as overlay of activity icon.

These updates seemed to have made my KDE unusable. Never would give me a desktop or respond to anything I did. Definitely not a fan. I love 4.8, but am now possibly regretting the update.

Test the system with a new (clean) user, if all is find with them, then its a problem with the users configs (a common problem with upgrading kde ). If the problems persist with the new user then its a broken install, check kubuntu-desktop is install (it will make sure everything you need is installed as well).

issue seems to be with the config files as with a new user no issue ... Which files should i look after in the screwed user home? .kde directory is so wide!

Most kde application settings are stored in ~/.kde/share/config (application data in ~/.kde/share/apps)

Plasma applet info is stored in "plasma-appletsrc"

Seems they have changed the settings organization:
- In the ~/.kde/share/config of user with working setup (user created after update)
plasma-desktop-appletsrc
plasma-desktoprc

- In the ~/.kde/share/config of user with broken setup (user created update)
plasma-desktop-appletsrc
plasma-desktoprc
plasma-appletsrc
plasmarc


plasma-appletsrc seems not needed anymore in the new version.

Of course, with hindsight being 20/20 and all, it is always wise to have a daily backup of your .kde folder. One fix, although not a good one, is to delete your account's .kde folder, and re-boot, which will force generation of a new, working one; although it will be reverted back to generic KDE. Not ideal, I know.

Daily - if not hourly - backups of configuration folders are deeply important things ...
