No sub-pixel rendering on desktop

The text under the icons on my desktop has some faded characters (quite noticeable on my monitor) which seems to be due to missing sub-pixel rendering. It doesn't work in the desktop folder-view or the taskbar, but works in all the apps. In the image, I've zoomed the '0' at the end of the filename by 400% to show there's no subpixel rendering on the desktop but it works in Dolphin (in which I've temporarily reversed the colours to match the desktop).

Any ideas?
