After upgrade to oneiric, weirdness with drawing some GTK and Gnome apps

This is an odd one. Since the upgrade (which went strangely fine for the most part, at least on my main machine in question here, a 64-bit install running with the Nvidia binary blob driver) neither Synaptic nor Aptitude-GTK will work, they just load up blank. Aptitude-GTK loads up greyed out, Synaptic loads up merely blank but goes to the same state if I hit "reload".

I could let this go, but when I do feel like using a GUI package manager, I have to sadly say that Apper doesn't cut it, and even Muon still feels inadequate. And although I'm fine just mostly using aptitude from the terminal (Yakuake is my most beloved application by far) it seems like this must point to some larger, underlying problem, so I feel like I should take care of it.

So, any ideas what's going wrong? For the record, I've disabled multiarch (I know that mucks up aptitude; sadly this means I'm unable to install Flash, since flashplugin-installer:amd64 stupidly depends on flashplugin-downloader:i386, but oh well).

Edit: I forgot to mention the most salient point, which is why I mentioned I was running Nvidia's drivers (and a 7800GTX, for the record). When I run Synaptic or Aptitude-GTK, they suddenly start taking up nearly 50% of one of my CPU cores, with Xorg jumping in doing the same. Why in the world would two different package managers both screw up like this, and in both cases cause strangely high Xorg CPU usage while they do so? Something weird (and I must admit, fascinating) is happening here.

Same kind of ? GTK / KDE problems: http://askubuntu.com/questions/77071...-kubuntu/77093

    1) Launch the Synaptic / Aptitude-GTK from the Konsole. Are there any error messages.
    2) Try without the Desktop effects.
    3) Try to turn the GTK widget style to the Raleigh. System Settings > Application Appearance > GTK+ Appearance.
    Have you tried ?

Okay, so strangely enough, if I maximize the window, guess what it does? Yeah, that's right, it suddenly loads up the package lists and acts fine (even when re-unmaximized, if you get what I mean).

      (1) Nope, no error messages whatsoever.
      (2) Disabling desktop effects makes no difference.
      (3) Changing the GTK widget style (in the module as accessed through SystemSettings) makes no difference . . . in fact, it doesn't even change the appearance, which is odd (although hardly the first time where that function went wonky for me).

So anyways, I guess it's possible to easily work around this, but the maximizing trick brings me no closer to actually solving the problem. It seems quite possible that it's something to do with the widget style (considering it's a drawing-related problem that eats up equal amounts of CPU under the name of the application and Xorg, yet isn't affected by disabling desktop effects), so I guess the next step is to figure out why I can't get GTK apps to change their widget style?

Actually, nevermind, more specific problem with changing styles: it's only for programs run with "kdesudo". But anyways, I ran aptitude-gtk with normal user privileges, looking all ugly in the Raleigh widget style, and it still did the exact same thing. So it's not the widget style either.

So, more GTK/Gnome weirdness; GIMP no longer shows most changes or states, for example, it fails to show changes in layer transparency. Seriously, does anybody have any idea what could be causing this?
