A few days ago I noticed a similar (the same?) problem but with the last updates the problem has gone away.
In my case it wasn't so much a crash but a complete refusal to acknowledge the shutdown button.
As so often the command:
Code:
sudo shutdown -h now
Did the trick.
In case of a serious hang up you have the option of Magic Keys:
Press ALT + SYSRQ and then slowly, one after the other R E I S U B. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key
