Wireless netowrk problems when screen locked.

Alright, so I just upgraded my Kubuntu 11.10 install to KDE 4.8 in the hopes of fixing a few bugs (Darned Muon Software Center kept crashing before). Thankfully, the process went very smoothly; or so I thought.

Now whenever my screen locks (which, since I'm using a laptop is pretty often) when I enter back to my desktop I cannot connect to any wireless networks.

I go to my Network panel and it tells me that the Wireless Network is "Unavailable" right above where it tells me that the Wired Connection is Unplugged. When I try to go to the screen where my available networks are it doesn't show anything, even though there should be a good 20 networks visible. I haven't found any way to reconnect to my network short of restarting my computer - which is kind of a pain - and then sometimes even that fails after 10 minutes or so.

Help me Kubuntu Forum guys, you're my only hope. I will be glad to try anything in my power to give more info for troubleshooting.

Sometimes the command line is a better tool for troubleshooting, so we'll spend a bit of time there. First, please copy and paste the contents of these two files in a reply here:

    /etc/network/interfaces
    /var/log/syslog

Sorry about the delay, dinner time.

      Alrighty, the /etc/network/interfaces

      auto lo
      iface lo inet loopback

However, my syslog is far too long to copy paste, when I just tried to put in the entries from today it was over 800,000 chars long. I'll give you the end of it, but if you need more I can send it to you by other means if need be.

        /etc/network/interfaces looks fine.

I should have been clearer about the syslog request. What you provided looks like the conclusion of a successful boot. I'd also like to see what's in there after you lock and then unlock your desktop. I'm trying to spot any anomalies that show up, perhaps offering clues as to why the wireless interface malfunctions.

Ahh, sorry, haven't spent a lot of time digging through logs. (Four years using linux and this is the first problem serious enough to warrant it in fact)

            Actually, it indeed has something:
            Code:
Apr 20 00:11:23 NerdBook wpa_supplicant[949]: Michael MIC failure detected
            Apr 20 00:11:23 NerdBook wpa_supplicant[949]: WPA: Sending EAPOL-Key Request (error=1 pairwise=1 ptk_set=1 len=99)

            ...is a problem.

            Please run
            Code:
            sudo sh -c "echo 'options ath5k nohwcrypt=1' >/etc/modprobe.d/ath5k.conf"
Reboot, do some stuff, lock/unlock your desktop, and notice whether wireless now works.

You did great! I did everything I could think of and my wireless is still working perfectly. Thank you!

Happy to help. I found numerous bug reports about Atheros wireless interfaces and issues with WPA/TKIP. Disabling hardware encryption appears to be the universal fix. Note that you're still protected; the cryptographic processes are simply occurring in the CPU now rather than the wireless adapter.
