Desktop freeze when network not available

Kubuntu 11.10 64bit fresh install on Thinkpad L420 (ubuntu certified, hah).

I have samba shares in my network that I've specified to be mounted in /etc/fstab. Everything works perfectly until I disconnect from the network. The whole taskbar and kickoff menu becomes unresponsive and stays that way until I connect to network again (possible only when using network cable.. can't reconnect wifi because pretty much nothing works). So the whole desktop is unusable without the network connection. Anyone noticed this?

I see this kind of problem has been reported before:
    https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=184062
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ux/+bug/390588

Thing is.. those reports are from 2009 and it's still there I really hope the upcoming LTS does not have this problem.

I'm tempted to try this out ... I just don't have a wired connection near my laptop. Does it also happen if you disconnect a wireless connection? (Understanding that you can't easily re-connect.) And does it happen if you don't mount the samba shares in fstab?
I'd rather be locked out than locked in.

I tested this more with wired connection but I recall it happening also with wireless, and only if the samba shares are mounted. I'll test it a bit more tonight and let you know.

Yes it does this also with wireless. And only if there are network shares mounted (There's a hardware switch on my laptop that I used to switch the wifi on/off).

          Have a look at

          http://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthr...ives-using-NFS

and try to do it like I did, as explained in item 11. It works great. Really.

            Thanks for the suggestion DeMus.

..though I already installed the 12.04 beta 1 to see if it has the problem, and it seems it does not. I will anyway upgrade to the 12.04 LTS once it's out.

There is another problem concerning network mounts but I will post about it in the 12.04 area soon.
