NVIDIA Graphics Driver Corrupted
This manifested itself when I was unable to get to the KDE login screen. I got as far as the Kubuntu blue boot screen, which then froze while my hard drive sputtered every once in a while. I was about to reinstall Kubuntu, but thought better of it. I remembered that, on occasion, the graphics driver (NVIDIA x84_64 295.33) does corrupt and yield nothing when starting xserver. Re-installing the graphics driver from the prompt did the trick. Over time, things DO get easier.
