Acer 5315 laptop will not recognise meta key

I have a Acer 5315 laptop and can not get the keyboard short cuts to register the meta (WinLogo) key.
I have tried mapping meta to Win Key and Left Win Key in the system settings, and trying different keyboard layouts such as generic 102/104 and Acer Laptop.

When I press the meta key I get a load of garbage in the shortcut key textbox. Also if I press the left win key I get nothing at all. Ctl/Alt etc work as expected.

Other than that Kubuntu rocks!!! With or without Canonical!

I am running KDE 4.8 from backports.
My desktop that is also running KDE 4.8 from backports works fine.

    What kind of garbage?

    I don't understand this part:
When I press the meta key I get a load of garbage in the shortcut key textbox. Also if I press the left win key I get nothing at all.
Which key are you pressing to get garbage if not the left win key?

Run xev in a terminal and press the left win key and the right win key (I'm assuming you have one). Do they appear in the xev output as Super_L and Super_R?

(There will be lots of other output from xev, so wait for it to finish and don't press any other keys.)

btw if you are trying to get Meta on its own to do something (as for example it does in Windows), that can't be done - in X it's strictly a modifier key.
I'd rather be locked out than locked in.
