[SOLVED] HP Laserjet P1005 not printing

    Hi.

    I can't use Kubuntu 11.10 for printing.

I have Kubuntu 11.10 (64 bits). HP LaserJet P1005 local USB. Driver foo2xqx (recommended). Also tried with alternative drivers hpcups and hpijs.

    System up to date.

Printer is installed, print job is sent and consumed but nothing is actually printed.

Printer was detected and installed automatically the first time I plugged it; probably (I don't remember) using a non-sudoer user.

I can print normally in Ubuntu 11.10. I remember the system asked me to download and install the driver from a terminal window, like usual with this HP printer. But Kubuntu never asked me to do so.

I originally reported this issue at Launchpad (comments #37 and #39):

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ps/+bug/883585

But fix released is not working in my case.

    Any piece of advice?

If Ubuntu asked you to download a driver I wonder if going to System -> Additional drivers will be of any help

If you open the cups interface at http://localhost:631 in a browser and try to print a test page from there, it will eventually return an error message that may give us a clue as to the problem.

Ubuntu is using the same driver than Kubuntu: "HP LaserJet P1005 Foomatic/foo2xqx (recommended)". Ubuntu automatically performs the whole process of making it work. I'm expecting the same from Kubuntu.

No error is reported, it behaves the same as sending the test page from 'printer configuration', namely: print job is sent and consumed but nothing is actually printed, and nothing happens.

Maybe it has to do with the aforementioned issue about downloading software, Ubuntu does it but Kubuntu does not.

Re: HP Laserjet P1005 not printing

I've been replied at launchpad and it seems I was right, the firmware is not automatically downloaded and this is a bug.

Till Kamppeter did the right answer:

          Thank you!

Welcome to this forum, Antonio, and THANK YOU for posting both your problem and the links to the solution!

I am putting the fix here just to make access easier:
Antonio, your problem is that under Kubuntu the printer's firmware file does not get automatically downloaded onto your computer. This will be most probably fixed in Ubuntu Precise (12.04). See also bug 913730. For the time being run

            sudo hp-plugin

in a terminal window and follow the instructions on the screen to get HP's driver plug-in (which contains the firmware files) installed on your system.

If the command above does not work, run

            sudo apt-get install hplip-gui

and then run the command above again.
