[SOLVED]Programs no longer launch after login

    Hi there,

After I login, Kickoff will not launch applications. When I click the K icon the system stutters and halts from 1-2 minutes (analog clock stops). Eventually the menu will pop up. I can click on any program and it will appear on the task bar and spin for a while then close without an error message. Plasmoids like weather do work at least initially. Process monitor will not work with CTRL+ESC. Can't get to a console session either so checking memory usage or anything while x-server is running is a no go.

    thanks in advance.

are you running out of disk space?

press ctrl>alt>F1 to get a TTY and log in .

    then type
    Code:
    df -h
and see if your / is getting full

    then
    Code:
    free
to see how the RAM is doing

At the blue boot screen, you should choose memtest+, and check disk errors...
I had had a similar problem, and I solved with them.
Or try to set all sxstem settings to default.

It would be very helpful to have the OP provide us with the specifications of their PC, with emphasis on the amount of installed RAM and what video card/GPU it has.

          Of course so sorry

          AMD Phenom 9600
          2 GB memory
          Nvidia Geforce 8400 on board
I *am* using the proprietary Nvidia drivers but it was working fine before

Disk partition were kubuntu resides is only 48% full
Nothing jumps right out at me with free

I do have the atop and btop utility but not familiar enough with them to get useful information.

Thank you. It is (almost) a certainty that it's the Nvidia driver that is causing your problems. Assuming of course, that you are using the proprietary driver. Are you? If 'yes', what version of the driver?

Problem must be specific to KDE. Everything works fine running a Gnome session.

Re: Programs no longer launch after login

Fixed. Bad or corrupt desktop settings was the problem. KDE worked perfectly when I created a new user name. So I deleted .KDE folder and all is well.
