Volume muted by default on open, how to change?

When kubuntu starts for some reason the default volume is mute... how can I change that? Its just an annoying "dont forget to unmute" everytime I start up, but I cant find any settings to do so.

      1. Open a command shell
      2. Run sudo alsamixer
      3. Press F5 to show all items
      4. Ensure that none are muted -- cursor to any that show "MM" and press M to toggle the mute off
      5. Press Esc to save and exit

Also in alsamixer, press f6 to change the device and make sure the other devices aren't muted.

I imagine you still need to save the settings. Up until 10.04 you could still type
            Code:
            alsactl store
