HP Pavilion dv6 core i7 issues

Hey guys.

been away for a while.
Got myseld a HP pavilion dv6 with intel core i7.
Nice machine but there are a few issues:
1. I Can't shut off the touchpad. Seached on the net but nothing I can figure out.
2. My Kubuntu (kde 4.7, kernel 3.0) stopped reading my usb sticks.
It works on the winslow side.

There is one more but I'll try and figure that one out later.

Okay, I got it solved.
It turned out that trying to get vmware player working with kernel 3.0 was the culprit.

That screwed up my usb ports and ym wifi.

I unistalled vmware player and all is well. (except for my touchpad which is really bothering me during typing).

Nice computer!

Here is how to patch VMware Player 3.1.4 for the 3.0x kernel. (add "sudo" prefix where needed for Kubuntu)

However, VMware Player 4 is almost ready for release (I know because it will offer to upgrade 3.1.4).

Hey dible. Yeah it is a cool machine.

I did follow your post but when it was finished I noticed a bunch of serious wierdness on the shutdown screen and at bootup.
Could it have something to do with the 8 cores on this cpu?
I noticed that when I was trying to convert my win7 with vmware converter 4.3 it only accepted two cores and wouldn't convert.

Anyway I'll just wait for player 4.

No problem with a Win 7 VM on my i7 950, which has 8 cores. I have used that patch process on 64-bit and 32-bit installations, including on one Kubuntu installation, so it is reliable.

However, I got a tip yesterday that you can get a tarball of VMware Player 4 here: http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds...80/linux/core/

So that's the best bet now.

Hey dibl, have you installed that tarball yet? I'm using VirtualBox 4.1.12 right now for my Windows 7 VM. I looked around teh Googelz but couldn't find anything that listed new features in Player 4. I'd be curious to know how it compares to V-Box...
