Nvidia just released 275.33 WHQL Drivers...Linux 275.09.04 SOLVES X-org crash

    All,

I am one of those unfortunate users who cannot get their Nvidia driver to work with Desktop Effects enabled in Natty. I have an Nvidia GTS-250 board that worked flawlessly in Maverick. Now, despite considerable dorkage with driver installation/blacklisting/initramfs updating, I am still unable to run my desktop with Desktop Effects enabled. My symptom was, and remains, a hard X-Server crash if I launch Konsole and attempt to resize the window with Desktop Effects enabled. The only recovery from this crash is a hard reset or power cycle. As an aside, I wish to shout out to Mr. Dibl, and Mr. DoctorDruidphd with appreciation for their posts with regard to Nvidia Driver Installation - good stuff.

Anyway, I did some research into the problem and found this bug report:

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...rs/+bug/760632

What I got out of this was that Nvidia is aware of the problem, and that they feel the forthcoming 275.XX based driver will correct the problem. I noticed that Nvidia released 275.33 WHQL drivers for Win7-64 today (see the Nvidia Driver Website).

Hopefully, this might indicate that help is on the way for those of us with the problem noted above. I'm not normally given to optimism, but the Windoze Driver release has given me a glimmer of hope...

Anyone else out there know more?

    cheers,

    XhwMikey

    See:

    http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show....php?p=2441669

This would require downloading and installing the driver from the nvidia site, bypassing the ubuntu and x-swat repositories. But if you have a dead screen, it might be the best choice.

This would be the "official nvidia way" in dibl's nvidia howto:

Edit: Ooops! Looks like the sql-backup-restore clobbered the howto. Hopefully it will be restored soon.

Here is the cached version: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3107406.0

I'm going to restore it, with edits, but not this minute. I spent several hours working on restoring and editing the "Top 20" today.

        @Doctor, and dibl,

Sweet! I will give this a try when I get home...

I'm on mid shift tonight so I am unable to get to my system until tomorrow.

        Thanks!

Looks like there is a version in a ppa but I haven't tried it myself.

          https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+...s_filter=natty

When it goes stable will it be added to the normal buntu repositories as an update?

They are also available in this ppa

            https://launchpad.net/~philip5/+archive/extra

I tried these and they seem to work fine and have cured the problem I had with the screen locking for a while when resizing konsole.

Usual warnings apply - they are beta drivers and it is an unofficial ppa. He also has a lot of updated packages so if you just want the drivers don't do a full update/upgrade with the ppa enabled.

              All,

              Success!

I downloaded and installed the 275.09.04 version driver from the link posted by doctordruidphd above.

I can now have desktop effects enabled, and can resize my Konsole terminal.

Life is SO much better now.

Thanks to everyone for your help!

Anyone know how to request to get this 'officially' part of the distro?

+1. Any idea when the fixed driver will get into the repo?
