ubuntu 10.4 with added kubuntu 10.4 booting system woes

Hi all Kubuntu 10.4 users,
Originally I installed Ubuntu 10.4 with out problems, then I added the Kubuntu desktiop with apt-get.
No problems so far,
After reboot of the machine the initial screen crashes totally. Only some horizontal lines . Another reboot into the rescue system
shows me that both Ubuntu and Kubuntu can be used alternatively.
Then I added to the bootloader the option vga=771 at the end of the booting parameters.

At next reboot the screen goes black again and there is the same crash it seems. I waited and after about one minute suddenly
the kubuntu logo appears and at the kubuntu login screen I can choose Kubuntu or Ubuntu and there are no more hitches so far.

Welcome to KFN. Noticed your avatar comment: "using Linux for 25 years." You might want to correct that, given that Linus Torvalds didn't develop the Linux Kernel until 1991.
