Have you shared the printer in XP?

Is this printer installed on XP on a different computer, or on the same computer? Just because you can use it in XP does not mean it is shared, you have to go to the printer properties in XP and mark the computer as shared. Then once it is shared, open the cups interface in Kubuntu by entering localhost:631 in the location window of a browser and see if you can install it from there instead of using the Kubuntu printer installation.

Then I think you have a samba problem, and I have not used samba in a very long time, so we need someone else to chime in here.

perhaps, but at the same time it works flawlessly for shared folders in the LAN.

wrong. it sees the printer but installs it as 'local'.
