Nailed it. It's hinting style. Only "medium" and "full" render the Ubuntu font correctly. "Slight" or "none" renders it fatty-fat-fat, regardless of rendering type (sub-pixel or not).

And also, it does indeed seem to be a QT-only issue, as Firefox looks fine while KDE is all bold Gonna file it at launchpad as a bug.

As you saw in my settings, Use anti-aliasing is set to System Settings. I changed it to Enabled so I could access Configure... and indead, sub-pixel rendering is not checked and Hinting style is set to Medium.

Indeed! I bet that's why only a fraction of users notices this. The default is medium, and I doubt that many people change it. I change it to none because I prefer the less-crisp and more "print-like" (one might say, Mac-like ) quality it gives the text rendering. If only all fonts could be rendered like they do in the font installer's preview window!

I just tried setting mine to medium but they still have the bold look (yes, after restarting X).

I set them to slight in KDE in the hope fonts will match any gtk apps I might use, which normally they do.
As suggested by others, I'm sure this is a bug of sorts.

Did an update tonight and the ubuntu font was one of the things updated.

Now KDE fonts have lost the bold look and look "normal" again with KDE and GTK apps matching.

They fixed it just 20 hours ago. Seems the bug is slightly more complex than just the fonts having a problem. Really, the fonts are good, but the font system and qt/gtk and their apps have issues understanding the stack. My bug report was a duplicate of this older bug report:
