Nailed it. It's hinting style. Only "medium" and "full" render the Ubuntu font correctly. "Slight" or "none" renders it fatty-fat-fat, regardless of rendering type (sub-pixel or not).
And also, it does indeed seem to be a QT-only issue, as Firefox looks fine while KDE is all bold

) quality it gives the text rendering. If only all fonts could be rendered like they do in the font installer's preview window!
