    [fixed] Update killed network connection

Today's (24 Feb) update seems to have killed networking. When kde starts, the network management program that usually sits in the system tray (it's whatever kde installs, not some extra thing) is now in the dropdown, and will not come up when clicked. When I restart the computer, and boot into recovery mode, and choose the "root shell with networking" option, I get the following error message:

    /usr/share/recovery-mode/options/netroot: 10: dhclient: not found

Didn't notice anything being removed, other than some compiz and unity stuff.
I can chroot into the system from other systems to do installs, etc.

This is NOT a wireless connection, but wired into a router. I didn't notice anything specifically related to networking in the update, but it must have been there. I also notice that the gnome desktop is completely borked, but that is a relatively minor issue compared to networking.

Thanks for the hint, Dr. D! Since no network = no further updating, I think maybe my Natty VM can wait a couple days to be updated!

      Re: Update killed network connection

I have done a little research, and the problem may indeed be an update-in-progress glitch.

The program the netroot shell is trying to start is /sbin/dhclient. In a natty system that has not been upgraded in a week, /sbin/dhclient is installed by the isc-dhcp-client package. It's a real program, not a link or script. In the updated/broken system, that package installs a link from dhclient to dhclient3, which does not exist. dhclient3 does exist in maverick, and it is installed by the dhcp3-client package. In natty, dhcp3-client is a "transitional package" that points to isc-dhcp-client, which now has dhclient-script (and running that doesn't work -- it's too much of a rube golberg script for me to figure out), and a link from dhclient to dhclient3....

      Shades of, "recursion: see recursion"?

So, yeah, waiting a few days may fix it. Or installing some other dhcp client, which I am reluctant to do unless the system is dead for good.

I notice that the un-updated system wants to install new versions of all these dhcp packages, but I think that for now, I will wait.

Re: [update warning] Update killed network connection

I ran updates around 9:00 this morning (U.S. Eastern Time), and my Natty system is fine, including networking. But I won't update again for at least 24 hours.

Updated 11.04 this morning (26 FEB). 93 updates and 3 new packages. Since there was a new xserver version, a reboot was required. Upon rebooting, everything including networking seems to be holding together. There has been a recurrent crash notification about something called "synaptikscfg", which means nothing to me, and I see no performance issues so it must relate to some hardware that I don't have or use.

I notice several updates in today's list to dhcp. Since there are about 500mb to download, it will take a while, but I will report back on the results.

Re: [update warning] Update killed network connection

Today's update included several dhcp packages, which fixed the problem.
So as far as the dhcp errors are concerned, the matter is closed, and safe to upgrade.
