Banshee 1.8.1 does not play streams as far as I can do

    I don't know, but....

way back at Xan days...and back in Klikit days... I reviewed all the available music players and although Banshee had a pretty kewl interface.......it, and most, did not play a "stream" such as from shoutcast or from Soma FM.

This is not, apparently, very hard for some, qmmp and Amarok will play any url you jam into them.

But, as of the 1.8.1 I can't get any stream to play in it as opposed to this page which "may" be talking about the latest beta release:

    http://banshee.fm/features/

But, I'll play devil's advocate here....let us say that there is some "way" to get the stream to play aside from following the instructions in Banshee which are: open radio stations, enter URL and save then click the thing.

I don't know how instructions can be much more clear.

If somebody has to give instructions on how to do it, then like the various clients for XMMS2, maybe Banshee is not quite "there" yet for the NEW PERSON to Linux who may want to choose Kubu.

Just to be safe I went to Kpackagekit and installed every app that had the word Banshee in them including an overhead shooting game and still nada...

So... if someone has something I can do...i'll have to say that Banshee may look like Amarok and it has a lot of features like Amarok, but it seems that it still can't do what seems to be something that several other players do.

    You can do this:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get purge libmono* libgdiplus cli-common libglitz-glx1 libglitz1
And to prevent accidental installing of Mono in the future modify /etc/apt/preferences and add:
    ----------------------------------------------
    Package: mono-runtime
    Pin: release a=noswpatents
    Pin-Priority: 999

    Package: mono-gac
    Pin: release a=noswpatents
    Pin-Priority: 999

    Package: libmono0
    Pin: release a=noswpatents
    Pin-Priority: 999
    ---------------------------------------------

After all, as my sig say, IF the MS API becomes default on the Linux desktop then what is the point of Linux?

WAIT its not even under the GPL.... thats a big -1 for banshee...and another -1 for being owned by novell.

that being said i haven't tried to use it i find amarok /qmmp to be perfect for my needs on my machines.

There is no "preferences" folder, there is preferences.d

If I should make a preferences folder I could do that.

Re: Banshee 1.8.1 does not play streams as far as I can do

I version assembly information there is still a bunch of stuff labled monoxxx

            Still doesn't play streams.

Maybe I'm not approaching this correctly. I go to Soma FM, I go to the thing like Groove Salad, I copy the URL and :
            radio
            add station
            stream url, (also name etc.)

Maybe there is some other way to "get the url"?

I just copy the URL into Amarok or qmmp...so....

            don't know.

I was just trying the thing out because I like to have competition going on between different app folks it keeps them thinking about improving things, but Bashee didn't play streams before either.

I haven't been able to install the latest version either, it is a tar and would have to be compiled etc. etc.

So...anyway, thanks but this probably is not going to result in a working Banshee, maybe in Natty it will work.

Re: Banshee 1.8.1 does not play streams as far as I can do

I probably wasn't very clear. Banshee and several other apps were built using Mono, which is a clone of .NET and includes MS proprietary gui and data technology which are NOT included in the EMCA 334 & 335 nor the "Community Promise", which is Microsoft's promise not to sue you for creating apps using JUST the 334&335 standards and the few extra technologies listed in the Community Promise document. The promise does not apply if you create or use apps created using the IP bits present in Mono. de Icaza is aware of the presence of MS IP in Mono and on TWO previous occasions claimed the Mono crew were "hard at work" separating the proprietary technology. They may have done that but just "separating them" while still making them part of the Mono dev tools still leads to applications which contain WinForms, ADO and other IP parts that Microsoft DID NOT release under the EMCA or CP. Hence, my first message, which contains instructions on how to purge Mono from your system.

Besides, even if everything in Mono is totally safe, my sig still applies.
