I actually experienced, a week or so ago, Geezer's situation about FF just sitting and spinning at a site.

It was a news site and FF had asked what I wanted to do with the site, and I just clicked close on the requestor without thinking.

When I finally had to hard shut down I went back to the site and clicked the option to accept popups and WOAH!!! I have never seen the number of animated things yammering for attention, the whole right side was a column of boxes of animations, there was an animation that covered the whole screen(the black see through) that had an animation, there were animations at the top, the story must have had ten or more hover links with the blue words.

To say the least I didn't finish the reading the story and they didn't get any click throughs from me.

I have often wondered just what kind of person would click any of that stuff, but, apparently, there are more than enough people that do to justify making them.

What kind of web designer would build a site that has all that crap that makes it take so long to load it times out?

Loading lots of bells and whistles into a program or a web site is a classic sign of a rookie in action.

Have you tried using Lovinglinux's Firefox extension called Flash-Aid? You can go to extensions in Firefox, then click "view more extensions" and when the website comes up, just search for flash aid or lovinglinux.

I found that little gem on the ubuntu forums. Worked great for me.

Hi,
I was having alot of trouble with websites loading very slow. The flash aid corrected my flash player plugin problem and I have not had any trouble since. I had already installed the 64 bit flash player for web browsers from the repos but that had no effect and my pages were still at a crawl. Once I installed flash aid it immediately told me that there was an update for flash player and that solved my problems. It may not help everyone but it sure made a difference for me.

I'm not entirely sure but I think you should re-consider moving away from Firefox.

correct me if I’m wrong but Firefox is a descendant of Netscape navigator, the 1st browser,

I think it would be a good idea to keep the faith with such a historic piece of software

I ran into the situation of not being able to right click and "save as" an image on the net after I installed FlashAid, so I uninstalled and I immediatly had the right click function back.

Have you observed such behaviour?

No I just double checked it and that function is working perfectly.

I have. It's not your browser - except as noted above. It's called right click block, or similar. AFAIK it's usually java script. If you want to see more, just google it or check out a script library like this:

People get protective of stuff they post on the web and don't want others to "save" it. Of course if you can see it, you've already downloaded it - that's why you can see it! (shakes head) It's hard to believe that there are people out there who can write web pages and add scripts, but still don't "get" the www thing. (sigh)

I agree, I could "copy" an image, then went to the download folder and "copy contents from clipboard".

Well, it's taken a long time to finally pin down the fault for my slow times in displaying web pages.

I have blamed it on many things, starting with Firefox, then the web servers, then my ISP and a few other things in between.

I use Verizon DSL and used the combined DSL/router they supplied when I started my subscription in 2006.

The last 3 or 4 days, I couldn't get some web pages to display at all. I was cut off from internet banking since the first page would display, but subsequent pages wouldn't no matter how long I waited. Same thing started happening on other sites.

About 3 weeks back I started getting some funny things happening when I booted the modem/router. I had started turning it off when I turned off the computer since I thought that maybe it was being hacked and maybe that was the problem with my slow connection.

The status lights started doing funny things and about half the time I had to reboot 2 or 3 times to get a good boot.

Finally the light dawned. Went to Best Buys and bought a new NetGear DSL modem/router, installed it (took all of maybe 5 minutes to tear out the old unit, install the new one, boot and connect, even with misleading docs and instructions) and my internet connection is now blazing fast.

I had called Verizon and inquired about a new unit, but since the old unit was almost 6 years old, I would have to purchase the new unit. The NetGear unit at Best Buys was almost the same price and newer technology. I had tried upgrading the firmware for the Verizon supplied unit, but the maker, Actiontec, claimed not to know anything about it since it had been customized for Verizon and Verizon claimed they couldn't do anything about the firmware. I had stopped buying Dell and Gateway computers years back since all of the major systems had the same problem and were stripped down and customized versions of the major makers - zero support.

So the router was the cause of your troubles. Nice to hear that you sorted it out, and are back among the 'jet set'.
