Sorting and aligning icons on the desktop

Is there a way to sort and align the icons on a desktop? There are some old discussions of this, but nothing applicable to recent versions of KDE that I can find. Or is there some reason in principle why it shouldn't be possible to do this?

On mine it's right click/icons/sort icons.

Given this issue and the other one we have been discussing I wonder whether something is wrong with your installation?

Is your desktop "activity" set to desktop or folder view?
