    Strange system activities

Running 10.10 on a small notebook.OS up to date.
Recently I have noticed my harddrive spinning for long periods of time. At the same time all of my RAM is used for something. Windows freeze, I cannot change or close applications until some RAM becomes available again.

    Checked system activities.

polkitd is using almost 25 percent of the CPU.
console-lit-dae is also gobbling up close to 20 percent of CPU capacity. It also has 64 threads open.
    xorg also shows high activities.

Any ideas what could cause this and how to prevent it?

Virus check and rootkit checks are negative.

I did not transmit anything at the time.

Is this without user programs running, or do you have a browser open? A browser will bring down the machine if it is determined to render something CPU intensive. Ctrl-Esc to see details or just type "top".
