Kubuntu 11.10 Problems With Intel GMA 855 32mb, Help Please

    Hi,

After installing Kubuntu 11.10 on my Laptop, there seemed to be 'Graphical' errors. The Min/Max/Close buttons would not show up and it was a bit sluggish to be honest. It was also the same after a reboot, up to which point I had to install Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) on my Laptop instead (Using Now). Further to this, after installing the 'Compiz' stuff on Ubuntu 10.10, I was 'not' able to choose any 'Desktop Effects' whatsoever, not even medium ones ect ect, so no 'wobbly windows' for me. With regards to this I was wondering if anyone using the intel GMA 855 32mb chipset has had similar problems with Kubuntu 11.10, and if 'Anyone' has been able to resolve these issues. I want to be able to use 'Kubuntu 11.10, With Kde 4.8, And 'Plasmoids' Is this possible with my Laptop, Of which the spec is......1.4Ghz Celeron M/736mb RAM/40Gb HDD/IntelGMA855 32mb Gfx.
If 'Anyone' can help me, it would be 'Very' much appreciated..........Many Thanks - Mark

I'm not sure if that graphics card will be able to handle compiz. Kubuntu doesn't use compiz, so it might work there. In addition, if KDE detects that the video system is too slow it will turn off desktop effects (or you can do so manually). The plasmoids don't depend on desktop effects, so they should still work, at least most of them. If you run Kubuntu, you may also want to install the low fat settings package. It uses a less graphic intensive theme and turns off some stuff to make the system perform better.

If Compiz says you cannot enable desktop effects it means your graphics card either does not have enough capabilities, or the driver you have installed does not provide access to them. And this will be the same in Kubuntu.

You could check if there is a proprietary driver available via K > Applications > System > Additional Drivers.
I'd rather be locked out than locked in.

        Hi Mark...

In all honesty, 32 MB's of video memory is simply not enough to handle today's graphics. I don't think you can expect eye candy of any kind with those specs. Unless you can bump up the graphic chipset's share of the memory (shared memory) in the BIOS to at least 128 or 256 MB's, I think you would be better off getting a new or newer system. :-(
