Acer Aspire 8930 - Internal mic not working

In Kubuntu 10.04 i managed to make it work, by installing PAV control, and changed the options from mic1 to mic2.
This unfortunately don't work in Maverick, and now i am completely lost :/

Does anybody have any suggestions how to make it work?

I'm not sure but I suspect that pulseaudio may be causing this. In maverick, pulseaudio comes installed by default. If you don't need the extra functionality of pulseaudio, you might want to remove it completely and then try to reconfigure the mics through KMixer. If anything fails to work then, you can safely reinstall pulsaaudio.

    Remove pulse audio:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio
Then restart your computer and set mics. I hope this will work for you.

    Regards.

        Open a konsole and issue:
        sudo alsamixer

which opens a console screen controlling the alsa mixer. Make sure your audio chip is selected. Arrow to the right and locate your mics and mic switch. Make the changes there as to which is active and the volume setting of the mic and mic boost. KMixer may not be seeing eveything that alsamixer can see. You can download the alsamixer-gui alsamixergui to avoid using the konsole.

How did it not work? Alsamixer wasn't installed? It didn't show mic controls? it did, but when you changed them nothing happened?

Re: Acer Aspire 8930 - Internal mic not working

                Ok. The hard route.

                Open synaptic.
                Search for

                pulseaudio
                pulseaudio-esound-compat
                pulseaudio-module-bluetooth
                pulseaudio-module-xll
                libpulse-browse0
                pulseaudio-utils

and remove them. Be careful that when you select a pulseaudio related file that you do not inadvertently remove most of your desktop! You can tell because if you select the wrong one a dialog will pop up asking if you want to remove ... a long list of files which include most of the KDE desktop. Don't remove those kind of pulse audio files.

                Install
                oss-compat
                alsamixergui

Reboot so update can see the audio chip without phonon interference.

                Open kmixer.
Open the "settings --> configure channels" option. A lot of options may appear in the left panel of that dialog. Drag the ones you think necessary to the right panel and order them (by drag & drop) in the sequence you want them displays. Older Intel chips (ICH5, etc) may require options which will appear on the right side of the KMixer window as drop-down combination boxes. They include:
                PCM Out Path & Mute
                Headphone Amp
                Mono Ouput Select
                Mic Input Select
                Mic Input Source
                Mic Select
                Mic1 Jack
Center/LFE Jack (<--- this has to be set to "Mixer Output" for ICH devices to play sound)
                Rear Jack
                Front Jack
                Line Input Source
                Linein Jack
                and others.

Open firefox and with the Kmixer window open play a long video from Youtube. Tinker with the levels and switches till you get the sound the way you want it. Be advised that older chips, like the ICH5, will not automatically switch between speakers and headphones when you insert the headphone jack. You may have to set the Front or Rear Jack to "Mixer Output".

In our case you may also have to adjust any "Mic Jack", "Mic1 Jack" or "Mic Select" settings... not that your Acer may have those ... but if they show up on the Kmixer...
