    Re: Impressive RC!!

OK. Found the culprit for the slowness. Kontact/KOrganizer Daemon. As soon as I run it, BAM, SLOOOOOW. Close it, happy, happy. Don't know why though! Might have to go back to Thunderbird

I disabled a few start ups I had and also stopped Nepomuk Search Module. That seem to get the speed back up. I'll look into the why a little bit later. The second problem is Plymouth, yet again. It was doing great up until I installed the Proprietary Video driver (NVidia, Desktop system in sig below). That improved further the Desktop speed, but Plymouth is back to a very ugly start up screen. So I guess it will be back to the fix posted somewhere here. Other than that, everything is smooth.

      Cheers!
Your right on nvidia driver speeding up the system. I haven't even installed it, and I feel its very fast. Also regarding that plymouth fix. Is this the one your talking about:

      Code:
      echo FRAMEBUFFER=y > /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash
      update-initramfs -u
I used it once on a Ubuntu install, but haven't since. Regarding ugly. I don't have to look at it that long anyway. Just like I don't have any spiffy grub thing-a-ma-jig. Just a simple blue on white menu in 640x480.

yes, that's part of the fix. There was a little more. It's somewhere here in the forum. I posted to it. I'll dig it up when I feel like fixing it. Went back to ThunderBird. That took a while. I really keep trying to give KMAIL and KONTACT chances but I seem to always go back to Thunderbird.

          Re: Impressive RC!!

I upgraded 2 machines and have had some small issues.

The icon for network manager disappears. Removing and re-adding the system tray solves the problem. Then the sound icon turns invisible. Placing the mouse pointer over the blank space and clicking brings it back.

The odd time I boot up my machine stops on the splash screen with the hard drive and the KDE logo. Short pressing the power button shuts the machine down and then it will boot into the desktop the next try. Odd not sure what is stopping it sometimes. Does this on both machines.

For those that this might help. I actually fixed Plymouth easier than going through the other routine. I added to the kernel line in GRUB after "quiet splash" the "vga=792" and now I have a normal nice looking Plymouth. Now all I'm waiting for is XBMC to have their PPA set up for 10.10. After dumping KMAIL, KONTACT and fixing Plymouth I can really enjoy 10.10. Smooth without issues. No Dolphin crashes either.

For Ubuntu the fix was to comment out "load-module module-device-restore" from "/etc/pulse/default.pa" file.

from a terminal run this to see:

                Code:
                sudo sed -n '/load-module module-device-restore/p' /etc/pulse/default.pa
Then try this to comment it out and see on re-boot if it fixes it:
                Code:
                sudo sed -i 's/load-module module-device-restore/#load-module module-device-restore/g' /etc/pulse/default.pa
For all the Kubuntu I have installed, my volume has been ok. It was only for early Ubuntu Maverick that we had issues.

I tried that solution and deleted my ~/.pulse/ and .pulse-cookie; but it is still the same =(
