Upgrade or New install/ any issues?

    Hi

    As noted here

    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...3484#msg243484

The Maverick RC is now available. The RC stage is where I usually move up a version.

My laptop (Dell 630m laptop) is 'buntu only and it's my only machine so I would like the transition to be as smooth as poss.

Any thoughts please on whether I should upgrade or do a fresh install (I have a separate home partition) and whether there are any issues I'm likely to encounter?

    Thanks
    Ian

Probably the best thing you could do would be to burn a Live CD, boot that, and do some testing -- check networking, multimedia, powersaving/CPU freq. scaling, or whatever are the most important items for you.

I've been running 10.10 on a VM since Alpha 3, and last Friday I went ahead and installed it on a hard drive. It appears to be solid and stable on my hardware, but of course that's only one case, and your hardware may not be 100% supported. No way to know for sure until you test it.

This question has come up many times and some are adamant that upgrade is the only way to go and other swear by a fresh install.
Since your using a separate /home partition it may not matter, as long as your hardware matches Maverick.

I always do a fresh install, but have cloned my previous release, just in case.

A little late - already did a fresh install with the Daily from last weekend
I'd say, do a fresh install, just to be on the safe side.

          Just got it sorted
In the first instance I decided to try an upgrade from the alternate cd. I burned a copy and did a full test on it (ok) but the upgrade command didn't work (although the disk would load on reboot of the machine).

Burned it again on K3bs slowest speed. Same result.

The CDRs are Sony and have never given me an issue before I have ruled that out.

Downloaded the live CD. Loaded the desktop and clicked install which then without issue. On reboot wireless connected straight away.

MM looks a very nice piece of work.

One issue I'm having though is for the life of me I cannot figure out which package I need to install to get the jre that Ooo will use.

I imagine it's a real dumb question (let's call it an age thing ) but can anyone help on this one please?
