Xorg = 100% CPU?

Anyone else seeing the symptom where on reboot Xorg is using 100% of one CPU? It's completely consistent on this machine (which I installed clean about two weeks back).

If I go back to the login screen and restart Xorg, I can get it to stop (CPU goes back to 0%).

This is with the current nvidia 256.53 (ubuntu2) driver.
Specs: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (@3Ghz), G.SKILL 4GB DDR2 1066, ASUS Striker II Formula MB, Asus EN9800GTX+ Dark Knight, ABS Tagan BZ800 PS, Antec 900 Case.

It's probably an issue with the nvidia driver. Uninstall it and use the nouveau driver, and the problem should go away.

Disregard the previous message to remove your driver for now. The first thing to look at is /var/log/Xorg.0.log, is it growing rapidly?

Also, if you are at KDM and you control-alt-F2 and log in with a user account, do you see xorg using 100% of CPU during that time too, or is it only after you log in?
Don't blame me for being smarter than you, that's your parent's fault.

That would get rid of a minor annoyance and replace them with big problems. I have a GeForce GTX 465 and constantly test lots of 3D games with Wine. I have an i980x CPU, so one thread out of 12 being pegged is not a concern. So, thanks but I'll pass.

No. It's not growing and there are no errors.

I'll give your other suggestion a try the next chance I get to logout (I'm running some VMs, remoting into training at the moment).

I'm not sure I'll be able to get to a terminal from KDM due to what I had assumed is a bug in the latest nVidia driver (the ctl-alt keys aren't letting me jump to the TTYs), but I should be able to ssh in from another machine to see if Xorg's floored.

By the way, I just noticed that when I try to switch to the tty's, that this message is appended to the Xorg log:

[ 10864.340] Failed to switch from vt07 to vt01: Input/output error

I guess I'll have to go check nvnews.net to see if anyone else is getting that.

I'm going to reboot now to take a look at Xorg while at KDM. BRB.

Tested and found the answer to your question zlow:

Yes, the cpu for Xorg is at 100% when freshly booted to KDM.

Here's something else I just observed. If I leave Xorg alone, pegged at 100%, I can login and everything works fine (other than the cpu usage). But, if I restart Xorg from KDM so that it restarts with "normal" (<1%) usage, I can log in and work fine for as long as I don't hit 'enter' in my yakuake window. If I hit enter in that Window, the entire desktop drops and I'm back to KDM.

Odd.

What happens if you boot to runlevel 3 without KDM starting, log in as your user and startx? Do you see a race condition once you get logged in?

I'll have to give that test a try next time I reboot. I managed to do a normal reboot this morning and did not have the CPU issue (1/3rd of starts seem to be 'clean').

BTW - The terminal issue went away. Not sure if it was yesterday's xorg updates, or the -22 kernel, but something fixed that one!
