Re: really horrendous upgrade this morning...

Wizard - thanks for the tip!

X is still broken on this install, but since it's Beta I don't mind. I'm sure the next round of upgrades will fix it.

Easiest way to do it is hit the red button on the kdm login screen and select console login - or you can select recovery mode from the grub menu.
Yeah, normally that should work but with 10.10 I never could make it work until recently, but I gotta try it once again now that I updated the system yesterday...
      Multibooting: Kubuntu Noble 24.04
      Before: Jammy 22.04, Focal 20.04, Precise 12.04 Xenial 16.04 and Bionic 18.04
      Win XP, 7 & 10 sadly
      Using Linux since June, 2008

KDE is still a little broken here. Yesterday's updates got me a shiny new error message - I didn't start this bug but I had to sign on to it

        https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...bs/+bug/640912

It's just an irritation, but I get an error on KDE start and the device notifier on the panel doesn't work any more but they'll get it fixed.

I just finished installing and testing today's Maverick daily LiveCD.

It's still broken. Fresh "out of the box", on the first boot up of the desktop, the login screen loop appears.

In addition, the is a kdeinit4 error, and, the GPG keys to one of the repositories is missing and part of the updates can't install.

Will try the next one tomorrow.

If you like trying daily builds, zsync is a great tool that saves a lot of bandwidth as it downloads only the changes from the image on your drive.

run this in the dir you have your iso in:
            Code:
            zsync [url]http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/current/maverick-desktop-amd64.iso.zsync[/url]
            or
            Code:
            zsync [url]http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/current/maverick-desktop-i386.iso.zsync[/url]

Good to know, I'm not alone. I kept waiting to see if anyone else reported this. I have the exact same issues, using nvidia video card. Maybe ATI's don't experience this.

In regards to claydoh's zsync message below. That's all I use. I never update until after the final release.

I also noticed that while Ubuntu's zsync's have been quite large, Kubuntu's have not. Until today. 30% increase for just todays alone.

That's the error I bugged above. Both 32- and 64-bit machines are doing it.

Thanks, Claydoh, that zsync works nice.

I decided to go back to the 9/8/10 daily livecd and reinstall it and then to the apt-get upgrade, like I did before, which worked OK. Well, it didn't work OK this time. Instead of 274 files there were 304 files, and when I was done I was presented with the login screen loop again.

I messed around with the error msgs. It said it couldn't find ~/.config/ibus/bus, so I created it and that msg went away, but I got another: "/var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket : Connection refused.", but the messagbus group exists.

The X app is still segfaulting.

I voted for that bug, it couldn't be worse than voting for a politician

BTW I think the login loop is present in KDE 4.5.1 not Kubuntu since I installed Arch Linux and it gets me back to the login screen after applying system changes or hitting OK button after forcing the windows to stay maximized. That's exactly what happens in Mave...

Updated just yesterday evening, but never had this kde4init bug happen to me.

I update daily (at least) and have not seen his one. I wonder if trying out the beta release instead of the daily would help here?

Any update on this? I have held off doing updates until I know this is fixed. I had this happen to me and just re-installed the beta.

Still broken on my end. Logged in using the console, and found 25 updates over the past two days. when I try to start the GUI and I enter user/pass, I get "Ubuntu 10.10", two dots out of four and that's it. Will try again later.

Edit: I'm running the 32-bit version, haven't tried the 64-bit version yet.
