Can't enable compositing after 10.04 to 10.10 upgrade.

I just upgraded to 10.10 from 10.04. The hardware is the same. Compositing worked perfectly in 10.04 but, now tells me that Another application has disabled it. I am using a Intel graphics chip so no Nvidia or ATI custom drivers. GLXGears works fine. Are there any know issues/suggestions before I continue debugging the problem ?

    Thanks,
    Elias

Seems to be issues with intel cards and kwin on kde 4.5.

Try going to the advanced tab in system settings then check the box that says something like "disable functionality checks".

I get the same notification. I'm running 10.10 in a VM, and thought it had to do with that, as the Host OS is Kubuntu 10.04. Maybe it isn't.

There is a post here on xorg-server-video (?) drivers that came down very recently that might be the problem. I remember early in the KDE 4.x series, that Intel Integrated Graphics GPUs (I have one) were off-and-on as to useability within the Desktop. If that is what is happening now, in 10.10, then it will/should be resolved in subsequent updates.

i run kde 4.5 in lucid as well as in maverick via dual boot. 4.5 in lucid (via the backports) works fantastic on my intel video laptop machine. kde4.5 in maverick runs....not so good

in maverick try going to desktop effects and disabling effects hit apply, then recheck the enable desktop effects and then hit apply again. helps on my machine, not perfect and doesnt fix everything but helps alot.

I tried disabling the hardware check and compositing does come on but not in a usable fashion. Looks as if it is trying to run on a non accelerated graphics card. Mostly likely is the xorg-server-video-intel.

May be fixed in newly released 4.5.1 which I assume will be in maverick.
According to the changelog: "Fix regression which caused desktop effects not working with some drivers"
