Does anyone know an easy way to get 3g Modems to set up in Kubuntu?

    Hiya everyone,

I am a ubuntu 10.04 user planning to migrate after virtualboxing Kubuntu 10.10 to test it out. I have previously attempted to get a Vodafone Mobile Connect 3G Modem (Model: K3565 - REV 2 3G) working with Kubuntu 10.04 (real install) and after a lot of work managed to get it to work.

Is there an easy way to set it up? in ubuntu 10.04 it just comes up with a wizard you answer some simple questions and it just works. Is there an wizard in Kubuntu 10.10? I need this modem to access the internet without this I cannot migrate due to lack of internet access.

LOL answering my own posts again that's familiar, from other forums

Have found no easy way as yet.

This is what I used and worked in Kubuntu 10.04:

    For Vodafone Mobile Connect 3G Modem (Model: K3565 - REV 2 3G) :

    Connect Modem Via USB
Look for Mobile Phone icon near clock (Bottom right)

    Connect Automatically: Tick

    Under “Mobile Broadband” Tab

    Number:*99#
    Username:wap
    Password: wap
    APN: pp.internet
    Type: any

    Under “PPP” tab

    Authentication: Tick
    PAP:Tick
    CHAP:Tick
    MSCHAPv2:Tick
    MSCHAP:Tick
    EAP: Tick

    Compression

    Allow BSD Compression: Tick
    Allow Deflate compression: Tick
    Use TCP header compression: Tick

If prompted by Kwallet select a secure password (make one up) then click “OK”

Doesn't appear to work in Kubuntu 10.10 alpha 3 (unless its a virtual box or alpha testing problem), it shows its connected in networking applet and displays a network address but rekonq fails to connect to the net for some unknown reason. (Its not exactly an easy way to get this info either)

I may have to resort to using kubuntu 10.04 if i can't solve this, Its my only net connection :-(

Tried same with virtualised Kubuntu 10.04 same issue with Konqueror.

These settings work on a normal install of kubuntu 10.04 so I guess the problem is down to Oracle Virtualbox 3.26rc63112

Oh well not the answer I was looking for but is an answer at least, hope the settings I posted work on real Hard disk installs of both Kubuntu 10.04 & 10.10 and someone finds them useful. :-)

PS: I would have to migrate to Kubuntu 10.04 in the time being anyhow as my system is Linux only and not dual boot, at least until 10.10 final is released.

KNetworkManager lags well behind NM from the Gnome environment in user-friendliness, and the most recent round of changes does not seem to have changed that situation. Even the Gnome NM doesn't cover all recent 3G modems (although the developers really do an amazing job keeping up with the "gnomes of Taipei" - sorry for the dreadful pun).

You can quite easily get round the problem for Vodafone dongles by downloading and installing the relevant Vodafone Mobile Connect DEB packages from <https://forge.betavine.net/frs/?group_id=12>. You will need VMC 2.25.01-1 and ozercdoff 0.4-2 (don't bother with usbmodeswitch, it should already be installed). Installation of the VMC package drags in quite a few GTK dependencies, and the package itself has a fairly pedestrian interface. However, it does work well on Kubuntu 10.10, and gives you access to a few options (such as an SMS facility) that neither NM or KNM provides.

          Thanks for the info bennachie,

I am still using Ubuntu 10.04 and wished to virtualize Kubuntu to test as I run a Linux only machine. It seems thought these settings are correct they do not work in Virtualbox, it says its connected but browesr doesnt respond (as if you are off line) they do however work in a real installation of Kubuntu 10.04 (I have tested that myself).

I am aware of the Vodafone Mobile Connect DEB but it wasn't completed last time i tried it that may well come in useful.

I like Kde apps but currently run them on Ubuntu/gnome has Kubuntu seems harder to use though i am trying to get to grips with virtualboxed Kubuntu 10.04. Ubuntu 9.10 suffered the same problem with out a functioning 3g connection it is useless to migrate as the internet is a main priority with linux to get updates and new software. I hope the Kde connection manager overcomes this with 10.10 has it caused many users to avoid Ubuntu 9.10 and use 9.04 or 10.04 instead.
