Bug in Synaptic toolbar

The Synaptic in Maverick (Version 0.63.1, same version as in Lucid) has a very ugly bug, messing up the toolbar >
As a result, the "Quick search" textbox and the "Search" button are not next to the "Properties" button, where they should be, but at the very right of the toolbar, making it quite cumbersome to use >

Here's a screenshot of the messed-up toolbar: (click for big image)

It looks almost like the tool bar is 'adjustable' - have you tried click+hold on the vertical divider and seeing if you can move it to the left?

Yes, I've tried - and no, the toolbar is *not* adjustable, the positions of all elements are fixed (same as in Lucid). There's no option in the menu either to modify or customise the toolbar (again, same as in Lucid).

I think this is a feature/design decision, and not a bug.

Ah, the old "It's not a bug, it's a feature!"
I wonder if they have some ex-Windows programmers among them

Anyway, I found out that you can use the handle at the very left of the toolbar to drag the toolbar *outside* of Synaptic. That way, the toolbar is fixed, and there's no empty space anymore.
Sadly it doesn't remember that, and you'll have to do it anew every time you open Synaptic >

You can say that aloud... a shame we don't have a Kde/Qt app that can compete with Synaptic

There is one under development. The developer has even become a KFN member. A few here have installed his 'work in progress' and are quite impressed with his efforts so far. When he is finished (not to much longer we are told), it looks very much to be a qualified rival to Synaptic, but without a single GTK connection.

Very nice. Any news on progress, as the thread is already a month old?

Re: Bug in Synaptic toolbar

it has had recent updates, it works rather nicely, I don't think there is any update notification integration yet.

I have not seen it crash yet, or even produce an error message at me.

It should still be considered alpha, though
(silly me I need to keep up with things better )

So we can expect 2.6.8 sometime around December then?

Wow, that is fast work, Jonathan!

I've got some suggestions to make for your program.
I took a look at the screenshots (here). Are these still the same for the current version?
I think it's not a good idea to waste two columns for text description of "Status" and "Requested". It would be much better to use icons instead for those two and move the to the very left, replacing the pointless "Deb" icon. I've made icons for that, based on Oxygen icons.
Instead, it would be better and much more informative to add colums for "Download size", "Installed version" and "Avaiable version".
I've created a mock-up of how it should look like (click for big picture):

Here are the icons (right-click to save the .png images)

Status

Installed

Not installed

Locked version (not updateable)

Requested

Install

Update

Uninstall
