I cannot activate proprietary FGLRX graphics driver

    Hello,

After an upgrade to Kubuntu 10.10, I couldn't activate the proprietary FGLRX graphics driver. I got this message form Jockey: "SystemError: installArchives() failed". Please if you can help try with me so I can solve this problem.

    Thank you,
    Mohammad

I know there is a thread like this here called: ATI Driver does not install - SOLVED. But it is marked SOLVED and I tried their solution but it did not solve mine.

It is also very likely that the current fglrx is not compatible with maverick's kernel/xorg right now. This happens every release cycle, sometimes many times, and often for long periods as well

it's one of the items in my pre-release notes and caveats at the top of this Topic

fglrx doesn't support the new 2.6.35 kernel yet. They'll probably soon release a special driver for Ubuntu Maverick, just as they did for Lucid before it came out.
In the meantime, compositing with the opensource radeon driver works fine here (4870).

Re: I cannot activate proprietary FGLRX graphics driver

FWIW, I successfully installed the latest ATI RadeonHD driver. I downloaded the file from the Ati website. Followed installation instructions. It seems that when you upgrade kernels you will need to run aticonfig (or whatever the app is called) to reconfigure Xorg. I couldn't get Ati's installer to generate deb packages, but otherwise it worked really well.

You may also wish to configure the graphics resolution that Grub uses.

Re: I cannot activate proprietary FGLRX graphics driver

But this is all moot what with the update to Xorg 1.9 coming down the pike. The smart move would be to uninstall the fglrx driver & wait until a version is released that is compatible with the new version of Xorg.
