    Thanks for that suggestion.

    Took a while to implement because I got hasty and half-trashed the system with the updates a couple of days ago and had to rebuild KDM and the KDE desktop - shouldn't be so impatient, I guess.

    I had wondered about whether some config files were screwed up. So, because the Maverick tester was on an experimental partition I had nothing of consequence on the Home directory so I just blitzed the .kde directory, deleted the xorg.conf file and rebooted. Hey Presto! Working Radeon system with Desktop Effects - even though the performance is about 10x slower than the FGLRX driver on my Lucid KDE 4.5.5 system.

      Yeah, that was a great suggestion.

      Performance in 2D should be comparable or better (in some cases considerably better). OTOH, 3D accel in games is typically 4 to 6 times slower At least, as of Lucid. But things keep improving, and stability is a lot better.
