Hi all....

Thanks anyway, but I was able to access the file I needed. However, installing things like this needs to be made more simple. Installing a plugin should not be this involved.

Simply press Alt+F2 and type: kdesudo dolphin and when prompted, type your password. Dolphin will be launched 'as root' and you can open/edit any root files to your hearts content.

Well, when the desired package is in the standard repositories, it is easy. When you need to add a PPA or other 'third-party' repository, you have to do so 'as root.'

Thank you, I need to remember "kdesudo dolphin" next time. My point, as you probably know, with my revised post is that having to add an address to an obscure file buried in the mass of folders by way of typing in a command at a terminal to gain administrative access that one should already have is excessively time consuming and unnecessary as well as frustrating.

How about an installer for Linux that operates the same way MSI does for Windows? Point-->click-->it's done! Synaptic does well, but for only for software that's available in the repositories and if that repository is included in the sources list. I'm talking about an installer that will install any linux program of any type (rpm, deb, tarball, etc) and from any location.

Have you used MS Vista recently? Remember all the UAC issues?

The point is *buntu is designed to minimize the potential for damage to the system by the user. I've told any number of people here in KFN - Stop trying to apply your M$ ways of doing things to Linux/*buntu. You will experience far less frustration, and learn your new Linux OS faster, if you treat it as a new language; a language you have not spoken before, but have a desire to learn.

Well, I guess knowing a little command line language does have it's benefits....knowing a bit more of the nuts and bolts. It's just when you are trying to get it done in the quickest way possible and the procedure that is set up doesn't allow for that is when it gets frustrating. In terms of simplicity and ease of use (and that is what most computer users expect,) this is one area where I regard Microsoft having the better method. Just an opinion.

I use Vista alongside Kubuntu and I have UAC disabled but yes, it is an irritation as well. Whatever OS I use, I would prefer to have all my options available to me and not have them limited by design and default to protect me from myself.
